Pineda, Pine tar Suspended 10 games, Pine tar probably gonna be gone awhile longer

Pineda suspended ten games for pine tar use

Contributions by Daniel Pfeiffer
Joel Wickerman
New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda was suspended for ten games on Thursday, one day after he was caught possessing a foreign substance on his person in his start against the Boston Red Sox. Pineda has decided not to appeal, which means the suspension will begin immediately and the Yankees will be forced to carry a 24-man roster for the duration of his suspension.

The 25-year-old pitcher was spotted with a brown substance smeared on his neck by Red Sox manager John Farrell, who brought it to the attention of the umpiring crew. Upon investigation, the substance was determined to be pine tar, and Pineda was ejected in accordance with +MLB rule 8.02 (b).

During a post-game interview, Pineda admitted what everyone watching on television already knew.

“In the first inning, I could not feel the ball and I didn't want to hit anybody so I put (pine tar) on,” Pineda admitted, declaring that he would learn from the mistake.

More: Pineda ejected after using pine tar in Yankee loss

However, it is unknown why Pineda did not learn from a previous mistake. The pine tar incident from Wednesday comes just two weeks after Pineda was spotted with a substance on his pitching hand while playing against the same +Boston Red Sox team. Because it was not brought to the attention of the umpires, no disciplinary action ever came of the issue.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman voiced his disappointment in Pineda on Thursday, indicating that the team had multiple conversations with the young right-hander since the first incident.

“I’m surprised that we as an organization are in this position,” Cashman noted when talking to reporters. “There have been enough conversations. And obviously there will be more now, or there have already been more now, even in-game when he was ejected from the game. I think after the last go-around with the same team, clearly there were a lot of conversations about this. There are no secrets there.”

Despite the ten-game suspension, Pineda will miss just one start due to off days built into the Yankee schedule. Though nothing is official, it is expected that David Phelps, who lost out to Pineda for the final spot in the rotation, will receive a spot start

Atletico Madrid bests Chelsea, completing an all-Madrid Final for Champions League

Champions League: Atletico Madrid tops Chelsea, seals all-Madrid final

Atletico Madrid is on its way to the UEFA Champions League final after a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Clive Rose/Getty Images
Jose Mourinho's Champions League semifinal misfortune struck for a fourth consecutive year, as Atletico Madrid beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge to earn a final place in Lisbon against neighbor Real Madrid. It will be the first time two teams from the same city have competed in a European cup final. Here is what caught our eye from Wednesday's result in London:

Man of the Match: Tiago Mendes, +Atlético de Madrid

There was not quite the fanfare surrounding the return of Tiago Mendes to Stamford Bridge that we saw in the round of 16 when Didier Drogba returned with Galatasaray, but the effect was altogether more decisive.

Atletico fans concerned about the suspension of Gabi, so important to the midfield this season, needed not to have worried; Tiago was a steady presence in the center of the field, and his vision set up the visitors' first and third goals, with floated cross-field passes releasing right back Juanfran behind Eden Hazard on both occasions.

Tiago was a Premier League winner under Jose Mourinho in 2004-05 and spoke before the game of the similarities between his ex-boss and Diego Simeone, for whom every decision paid off perfectly in London - from the call to start Adrian Lopez, the first goalscorer, ahead of Raul Garcia, and to restore Arda Turan, scorer of the third, to the team.

"When you think of both you immediately see not just the figure of a coach, but of a leader," Tiago told El Pais last week. "These are two very similar teams and two coaches who know exactly what they are playing for. Mou puts himself inside your head. Simeone instils an idea in you too."

If it was a clash between the two coaches, there was only one winner.

Mourinho, it might be said, was even panicked into making a substitution too early, bringing on Samuel Eto'o at 1-1 with 40 minutes still to play. Was he chasing the game too early? It was Eto'o who conceded the second-half penalty which as good as killed the contest.

A word on the penalty scorer, too: Diego Costa gave John Terry a bruising encounter in Madrid and, though he had little to feed on here, it was the same story. If this was a job interview for a role at +Chelsea Football Club next season, Costa passed with flying colors: he has the physique, power, and eye for goal that reminiscent of Didier Drogba in his pomp - just the type of player, in fact, that would fit perfectly into a Mourinho side.

He also showed impressive composure with a nerve-wracking penalty. He struggled to keep the ball from rolling off a divot on the penalty spot, and was booked for taking over a minute to spot the ball. As the time passed, the Chelsea players surrounded him to increase the pressure, and indeed his thinking time before the kick. When it came, the kick was decisive: even though he had missed four penalties this season, Costa smashed the ball into the roof of the net. That made it 2-1 but it was Turan's goal, Atletico's third that was created by Tiago and Juanfran, that provided the coup de grace.

Fernando Torres' opening goal did not change too much for Atletico, which, penalties aside, always needed an away goal to progress. That its goal came so soon after Chelsea's summed up the story of the day in London, where subway strikes left fans relying on buses, just a few days after Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accused Mourinho of parking "two buses" in front of its goal in last week's win at Anfield. So we waited two hours and six minutes for one goal between these teams, then two came in seven minutes.

WATCH: Torres scores vs. former club Atletico, won't celebrate

Moment of the Day: Adrian gets the away goal

Adrian's equalizer was a huge turning point, coming one minute before the halftime break and requiring Mourinho to push for a second goal. It could have been avoided too, coming as the result of a series of defensive errors, starting with Hazard losing Juanfran at the far post, Terry and Ashley Cole failing to cut out the cross, and Adrian with the time to hit the ball into the ground and see it canon into the top corner.

Adrian's selection was another perfect decision from Simeone: he provided more pace on the counter than Raul Garcia, but also has a a habit of making it count in the big games, as he was fantastic in the win over Barcelona in the last round. The fact that he had gone 21 games without a goal? No problem.

Thibaut Courtois, playing his first game at Stamford Bridge, nearly three years after signing for Chelsea, also reacted smartly to a John Terry header soon after the goal, and the more Chelsea pushed, the more secure Courtois looked. He did need the post to save him from a David Luiz header. But when Mourinho looks back at the game, he will know that the loss of concentration just before halftime changed this tie.
How Atletico Madrid stacks up against +Real Madrid C.F.

No one would dare admit it, but you would imagine Real Madrid would rather have faced Chelsea than its local rival in the final in Lisbon. Since Diego Simeone came to Atletico Madrid, one of his greatest achievements has been to end his team's curse against Real Madrid: a run of 25 games and 14 years without a win.

That came in the Copa del Rey final last season - ironically when Mourinho was coaching the side - and since then, Atletico has beaten Madrid at the Bernabeu (1-0, Diego Costa) and drawn 2-2 at Estadio Vicente Calderon. In between there was a Copa del Rey semifinal that Real Madrid won 5-0 on aggregate.

Diego Costa after PK Goal (Getty Images)
Despite that, Simeone is proving himself a master of the cup competitions, winning the Europa League and European Super Cup (against Chelsea) as well as the Copa del Rey. His Atletico side is unbeaten in Europe this season and has only conceded six goals in 12 games.

Will it be able to keep a clean sheet against Real Madrid, and the might of its Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale combination? We have just over three weeks to find out, but if the story of this European season is that counterattack has overtaken possession-based play as the dominant tactic, then this final will continue that narrative.

Boise State's Unique TV Contractual setup has the MWC expected to receive over $1 million from ESPN: Bronco Blitz

Mountain West Conference to get $1.1M from ESPN, due to Unique TV Contractual setup by Boise State

Broncos of Boise State Trying to Blitz the Whole State of Idaho

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State University entering second year of deal with ESPN that will give the school athletic conference, MWC, at least $1.1 million and up to $2.6 million more in bonuses for broadcasting most of its football games on the sports network.

The Idaho Business Review (http://bit.ly/1lvc1rr) reports ESPN will show all but one of the Broncos' home games this fall, with a non-conference game against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette shown on the +CBS Sports Network cable channel.

CBS Sports Network is the primary rights holder for most games in the Mountain West Conference, to which Boise State belongs. But ESPN is the primary rights holder for Boise State home games.

The Broncos get $300,000 for any home or Mountain West Conference game on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC. The Mountain West also gets $200,000 for any game played on Saturday.

Under the schedule released April 17, the Broncos will get $500,000 for the team's home opener, a Saturday game against Colorado State University on Sept. 6 that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Broncos also get $300,000 each for Friday night home games against Fresno State and Brigham Young University in October that will be on ESPN or ESPN2.

If any of the Broncos' final three games are picked up by one of ESPN's main networks, the university will get a bonus.

The Mountain West Conference doesn't disclose how much the CBS Sports Network football contract pays each team.

Syracuse goal Pushes them into ACC Final, score in last second, literally, to drop Duke 16 - 15

PUNCHING BACK: Donahue’s last-second goal pushes Syracuse past Duke, into ACC tournament final

Dylan Donahue celebrates after netting the game-winning goal with less than a second remaining in a 16-15 win over Duke on Friday.

By Josh Hyber

CHESTER, Pa. — Five different +Syracuse Orange players touched the ball in a 14-second span.

Chris Daddio — who had won just 10-of-31 faceoffs —beat Duke’s Brendan Fowler. With 10 seconds left and the game tied, Peter Macartney scooped up a groundball and fired a cross-field pass to Randy Staats.

With three seconds left, Staats threw a pass into the middle of the field to Kevin Rice. Rice, Syracuse’s leading assist man, threaded a pass around +Duke defender Henry Lobb and onto the stick of Dylan Donahue.

With less than a second remaining, he tapped a shot by Duke goalkeeper Luke Aaron, into the back of the net.

With a heavy rain falling on Friday night at PPL Park, Donahue’s last-second goal completed a 16-15 comeback win as No. 4 Syracuse (10-3, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) beat No. 2 Duke (12-3, 4-1). The Orange advances to the championship game of the ACC tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m., when it will face No. 9 Notre Dame. The victory avenged SU’s last loss – a rain-soaked 21-7 demolishing by Duke at Koskinen Stadium on March 23.

“After the faceoff I started coming off the field and didn’t even see what happened,” Daddio said. “But that’s just the way we play. That’s ‘Cuse lacrosse. That’s the way it’s always been and that’s the way it’s always going to be.”

Just 15 seconds before Donahue’s dramatic goal, Billy Ward tied the score at 14. Staats flipped a pass over his right shoulder around Lobb and Casey Carroll to seemingly no one before Ward snagged the ball and scored the tying goal.

After trailing 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 14-10 with 10 minutes to go in the fourth, it looked as if history would repeat itself.

“Since that game against Duke where we lost by 14, we’re a different team,” Rice said. “This was really our first true chance to show that we are a different team. We could’ve folded in the first quarter but I think it showed that we’re not that same team that got beat down earlier in the season.”

With 9:06 remaining in the game, Rice scored a wraparound goal to cut the deficit to 14-11.

Thirty-eight seconds later, Hakeem Lecky took a pass from Donahue and stuffed a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to cut the Blue Devil lead to 14-12.

Syracuse had life.

“We felt the defense was getting tired with the amount of possession we were having, and fortunately our middies have been doing a great job of dodging all year,” Rice said. “They start the defense rotating, and we were able to capitalize on the back end.”

With 6:40 to play, Donahue found senior Derek Maltz, who cut the lead to one.

On a Duke turnover, Drew Jenkins sprinted 30 yards down the field and found Rice, who found Donahue to tie the score at 14.

Duke attack Jordan Wolf went around Jenkins and put a shot past Bobby Wardwell from in close to put the Blue Devils back up, 15-14, with just over three minutes to go.

Fowler, one of the top faceoff specialists in NCAA history, won the ensuing faceoff, but the Syracuse defense caused a turnover before Ward’s tying goal.

“It just shows how much character and how much poise we have,” Daddio said. “I’d like to have that against any team, but it definitely is an addition being Duke.”

Chicago Bulls 100, Washington Wizards 97: Wizards lead series 2-1

Dunleavy with Career game gets Bulls back into Series, down 2-1 vs. Wizards with Game 4 on Docket

+USA Today Sports Media Group (USATSI) - Photo Courtesy/Rights
• We had a little scuffle in this game that cost the Wizards having Nene in down the stretch. He and Jimmy Butler got into it during the fourth quarter. With 8:27 left, Nene ended up putting his forehead against Butler's, before grabbing him around the back of his head and needing to be separated.

• Butler stayed in the game and hit a huge 3-pointer to put the Bulls up 94-91 with 24 seconds left. He finished with 15 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. 11 of his points came in the fourth.

Mike Dunleavy had the scoring explosion the Bulls were desperate for in this series. He had 35 points on 12-of-19 from the field and 8-of-10 from 3-point range. He had 16 points at halftime and then came out and scored 13 more in the third quarter. He gave the Wizards' defense someone they had to focus on the rest of the game and it helped space the floor a bit for the rest of the offense. They've been desperate for a guy like that.

Bradley Beal once again hit some big shots for the Wizards. It's like he craves the big shot when it comes to carrying this team in the fourth. He ran off seven straight points in one minute and seven seconds. He finished with 25 points with 13 of them coming in the fourth quarter.

John Wall was great as well with 23 points, seven assists, and four steals. He also only had one turnover in the game. But it feels like he needs to create a few more opportunities for his teammates right now. Perhaps that needs to come in transition and Washington couldn't get a ton of stops to create fast break chances.

• It wasn't just the ejection in this game: Nene struggled to score the ball. He was 5-of-15 from the field, but his presence late in the game could have provided some much-needed presence inside. It didn't look like the Wizards had a drop-off option to score inside on late drives or dribble penetration, and Nene is that guy for them.

• Wall's body control is absurd. This was part of an 11-point first quarter that set the tone early for Washington but they eventually lost some offensive steam.

Joakim Noah had four assists, pushing the Bulls to 34-20 this season when he gets at least four assists in a game.

Raptors Nearly Claw Back, Nets Hold off for 2-1 Series Lead

Nets hold off Raptors, grab 2-1 series lead

Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The +Brooklyn Nets nearly wasted a 15-point lead with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but held off the +Toronto Raptors, 102-98, in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Joe Johnson had 29 points and Deron Williams added 22 with eight assists for Brooklyn. The Nets, who also received 18 points from Paul Pierce, bounced back from a 100-95 loss on Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

DeMar DeRozan scored 30 for the Raptors. Patrick Patterson, who had 17 points, had a chance to tie the game with 19 seconds remaining, but missed two free throws. The second attempt kicked off the heel of the rim and Toronto's Landry Fields touched the ball as he tried to save it in bounds.

Pierce drained two from the charity stripe with 14.6 seconds to go, but Amir Johnson's putback off a DeRozan miss made it a 100-98 game with 3.7 seconds left.

Joe Johnson made two more from the free-throw line less than a second later to seal the outcome and send the Raptors to their 13th straight road playoff loss. Toronto's last playoff road win came May 6, 2001 at Philadelphia.

"We got a little lackadaisical," admitted Joe Johnson. "It was very uncharacteristic of us to blow a lead like that."

Paul Pierce Drop in 2 pts vs Toronto in 1st Round of 2014 Easter Conference Playoffs - +NBA
Game 4 of this best-of-seven set is Sunday night, again at  Barclays Center.

Jonas Valanciunas tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Lowry scored 15 before fouling out for Toronto.

A 3-pointer from Joe Johnson raised Brooklyn's lead to 93-78 with 5:02 remaining, but Toronto scored the next eight and the Nets nearly gave the game away.

Williams missed two foul shots with 40.7 seconds remaining, failing to extend a 97-93 lead. DeRozan drained a layup at the other end and was hit by Kevin Garnett, who fouled out. DeRozan made the foul shot with 34.3 seconds on the clock, but Shaun Livingston countered by making 1-of-2 from the charity stripe 14 seconds later.

The Raptors used a big surge in the latter stages of the opening quarter to grab a 23-19 edge after 12 minutes.

The Nets went 10-of-17 from the field in the second and grabbed a 49-45 edge at the half. Included in the period was a 12-1 Brooklyn run.

Brooklyn scored eight straight, all from Joe Johnson, during one juncture in the third to expand their lead to 63-52. The hosts led 77-66 moving to the fourth.

"We have to be aggressive for the whole game," DeRozan said. "Once they had the big lead we tried to fight back. We can't put ourselves in that situation."

Game Notes:

(Michael Conroy, +The Associated Press )

Despite 15 wins, a Super Bowl appearance and a free-agent haul, the Broncos have needs.

They are looking to add depth, if not immediate contributors at cornerback, linebacker and the offensive line. Even with the addition of Aqib Talib, the Broncos could use help on the perimeter to protect themselves as Chris Harris recovers from knee surgery.

Justin Gilbert fits the bill. The 6-foot, 202-pound Oklahoma State star tweeted that he will visit the Broncos this week in advance of the upcoming May 8-10 draft.

The +San Francisco 49ers will open their new venue, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., against the +Chicago Bulls in Week 2. Levi’s Stadium will also be the site of Super Bowl L in 2016.
