Kid tells teacher he has appointment with 'Dr. Verlander'

Monday is a special day for baseball fans, with 25 teams beginning their 2014 campaign.

It won't last long for many, but hope and optimism reign supreme for everyone on this day.

One youngster even penned a note to his teacher to explain why he wouldn't be in school today.

We're not sure the teacher will believe Chris' dad wrote that note, but the "Dr. Verlander" line is a great touch.

Chris Johnson, threat with ball in hands, to be Released Next Week by career franchise, Tennessee Titans per Sources

Titans likely to release RB Chris Johnson next week

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com
March 28, 2014 5:25 pm MT
Chris Johnson's tenure in Tennessee may be coming to an end. (USATSI)

One way or another, Chris Johnson almost certainly won't be with the Titans next month when the team reports for offseason workouts. Johnson was reportedly on the trade block in early March. And even with multiple teams interested in his services, his $8 million base salary in 2014 is prohibitive, which is why he'll likely be released, perhaps as soon as next week, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

As for possible landing spots, the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt thinks Johnson ends up with the Falcons, who signed 30-year-old Steven Jackson last offseason.

At the annual NFL meetings earlier this week, new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team will continue to weigh their options with the 29-year-old Johnson, the team's 2008 first-round pick.

"This whole thing is a process," Whisenhunt said, via the Tennessean. "There's not a timetable on doing it. We're trying to do what's best for the team. We're certainly sensitive to try and resolve this whole deal sooner than later. It's just a process that you go through. I hope the fan base understands we're trying to do what's best for our team. All that matters is what we do on Sundays and winning those games."

Meanwhile, Johnson, who averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry last season, plans to show up for the Titans' offseason workouts that begin April 7.

"Yeah, I plan on being there," Johnson told the the Tennessean Tuesday. "If I haven't been traded or released by that time, I will show up in Nashville and be ready to go from day one with the team. There's been a lot of speculation about the future, and where I'll be. But I am under contract with the Tennessee Titans. That's my team. And whatever team I am with when the offseason program starts, that is where I am showing up.

"I want to run and lift with the team and do what I can to make the team better. If April 7 gets here and I am on the Tennessee roster, then I am going to show up ready to go."

+NFL Rumors: Jets Interested in +Tennessee Titans Chris Johnson

Published by Sam Spiegelman

After a relatively quiet offseason on the Chris Johnson front, the past two days have been jam-packed with rumors.

The newest team making a push for the former 2,000-yard rusher is the New York Jets. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Gang Green is expected to acquire a veteran running back, and the team has kept its eye on Johnson.

While the Jets may not be the perfect fit for Johnson, who is still confident in his ability to be a workhorse for a team, he could serve as a nice 1-2 punch with bruiser Chris Ivory, who the team acquired last offseason.

“The Jets are interested in acquiring a veteran, and the name to watch is Chris Johnson,” Cimini wrote. “Yeah, that Chris Johnson, who likely will be released by the Tennessee Titans. The Jets need speed, and Johnson has speed. I’m not sure he’d want to play for the Jets and be part of a committee, but I could see the Jets showing interest, depending on his price. He’d be a nice complement to Ivory, a thunder-and-lightning tandem.”

On Friday, Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean reported Johnson was most likely going to land with the Atlanta Falcons. Because of the $8 million Johnson is owed this coming season, the most likely scenario would include the Tennessee Titans releasing the veteran back. Then then +Atlanta Falcons could sign him as an unrestricted free agent.

Soon after that news surfaced, +CBS Sports Network' Jason La Canfora reported the Titans could cut Johnson as soon as next week. Because the aforementioned $8 million salary, finding a trading partner is extremely difficult. Johnson would have to be willing to take a pay cut in order to sign with the Falcons, who have about $8.7 million remaining in cap space. The +New York Jets are in a better financial position, with about $35.7 million available following the release of Mark Sanchez.
Johnson’s divorce with Tennessee has been speculated about since January, when the Tennessean reported the team was considering cutting him. Earlier in March, Pro Football Talk suggested the team put Johnson on the trading block.

Regardless, it seems as if the Johnson situation is close to coming to an end. If and when he is released, it seems as if Atlanta and New York are the two teams to keep an eye on.

NCAA tournament refs made another bad call at end of Arizona-Wisconsin game

By CHRIS CHASE
(USA TODAY Sports Images)
Dear NCAA tournament referees,

Let ‘em play.

Sincerely,

All of us

For the second straight night, a classic +NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness game swung on the overeager whistle of a referee. With four seconds left in overtime of Saturday’s West regional final and his team trailing by one point, Arizona’s Nick Johnson was called for a charge on Wisconsin’s Josh Gasser. The Wildcats would go on to lose the game, 64-63.

Refs got the end of the +University of Michigan - +Tennessee Vols wrong

Was it a charge? Maybe. Johnson threw his body into Gasser and pushed off with his left forearm. There was certainly enough contact to blow a whistle.

But was it a block first? Maybe. Gasser bodied Johnson as he started his drive. +SPORTS CR3W. That contact is what led to Johnson throwing the forearm.

(USA TODAY Sports Images)
When it’s up in the air like that, there’s only one call to make: Not making one at all. What had been a well-officiated and well-played +NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness Tournament has turned into an unfortunate zebra showcase over the past 26 hours. Part of that is because the competition is better, the stakes are higher and there are more eyes on the games. Part of it is officials who think they’re on display. Let the athletes settle it, not the refs. When there’s 10 seconds left in a game and one possession separates the teams, keep the whistle around the neck unless it’s something egregious.

But just like the previous night, one bad call led to another. On the inbound pass after the charge call, both teams slapped for the ball as it went out of bounds. Officials spent almost five minutes looking at the replay. Though the ball was initially awarded to +Wisconsin Badgers, the interminable review eventually gave +Arizona Wildcats the ball with 2.3 seconds left. This appeared to be the right decision, though it was far from conclusive.
(USA TODAY Sports Images)
But there was one thing officials missed before the ball was tapped out of bounds. Look how far Arizona’s Aaron Gordon was over the baseline.
(USA TODAY Sports Images)
They all even out.
Then again, it could be the NIT officials doing the games and that would be catastrophic, no doubt.
This is what the original post said but it would be an extremely long stretch to even say that the foul called on Johnson's drive was equivalent to a side out, in bounds pass with 2.3 seconds left to get 50% of as good of look as he had on the drive with 3 seconds left. Johnson's teammate was right there for the rebound if the shot did bounce as it did for essentially the putback winner like the +Texas Longhorns buzzer beater over the +Arizona State Sun Devils in the 2nd round. Not quite even there, especially when you consider the fact that Wisconsin got a favorable 1 and 1 call on a ball that Johnson was trying to tie up, got elbowed in the face and touched the player after the blow. Really not a foul at all and those 2 points were monumental. Called by the same official, we would add.

DeSean Jackson Tracker Indicates many teams Vying for his Services

At least a half-dozen teams reportedly have contacted the agent for DeSean Jackson
following his release Friday from the +Philadelphia Eagles.

Gregg Rosenthal has filed Around The League's list of
potential landing spots. Which of those eight teams are showing interest in the playmaking wideout?

Here is our Jackson tracker:

1. +Washington Redskins: Sources informed of Jackson's situation have told +NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that the Redskins are one of the "wild-card" teams interested in the playmaker. Washington has roughly $7 million in cap space and an owner with an affinity for splash moves. The 'Skins made the first tangible move toward signing Jackson. The Redskins have scheduled a Monday visit with the free agent, per Rapoport.

2. +Oakland Raiders: Rapoport reports Jackson reached out to let the Raiders know of his interest in joining the organization before he was even released by the Eagles. The Raiders have been doing their due diligence on Jackson for over a week now, per Rapoport. Oakland is close to Jackson's alma mater and can offer him a more lucrative contract than other competitors.

3. +New York Jets: People in the Jets' organization are still interested in Jackson following his release, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The New York Post confirmed theJets are still interested, but cautioned that conversations still have to happen at the highest levels of the organization before a plan is solidified. John Idzik was not among the general managers to contact Jackson's camp on Friday, per Mehta.

4. +Buffalo Bills: The Bills are the other wild-card team in the mix, according to Rapoport. They have plenty of salary-cap space. The Doug Whaley-Doug Marrone regime has placed an emphasis on wideouts with track speed, which Jackson has in abundance. The team's brass also has shown a penchant for giving players with questionable reputations a second chance. The Bills have set a predetermined price on Jackson and will not enter a bidding war, reports the Buffalo News.

5. +Carolina Panthers: Although coach Ron Rivera told USA Today the Panthers would be interested, multiple reports have emphatically declared that general manager Dave Gettleman will not be in the mix for the talented but controversial wide receiver.

6. +Tampa Bay Buccaneers: General manager Jason Licht gave Jackson a lukewarm endorsement Friday. "He'd have to be the right fit on and off the field," Licht said, via the Tampa Bay Times. "I don't want to dismiss him right away but we're looking at a bunch of other players, too."

Among the teams reported having varying levels of interest prior to Jackson's release are the +San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and +New England Patriots .

Teams not in the hunt:

» Rapoport reported Saturday that the +Kansas City Chiefs are out of the running despite recently doing research on the wide receiver. Although coach Andy Reid spoke glowingly of his former No. 1 receiver earlier in the week, there will be no reunion in Kansas City.

» A league source told the Chicago Tribune the +Chicago Bears have no interest in Jackson.

» The Arizona Republic confirmed the +Arizona Cardinals are not interested in adding Jackson.

Eight teams are one step away in the +NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness — but how meaningful that a step is, depends, on the program.

For the bluebloods of college basketball, getting past the Elite Eight means another crack at an all-important title. Otherwise, it’s just another item to update in next year’s media guide. But for those getting a rare — or even first-time — Final Four opportunity, the experience is potentially program-changing.

Here are my highly arbitrary rankings – from a “Meh” 1 to “Holy Smokes!” 10 – on the importance of a trip to Arlington.

SOUTH REGION

11. +University of Dayton (26-10) vs. 1. +Florida Gators (35-2)
5:09 p.m. today (TBS)

DAYTON: 9 (“Is that tear gas?”) +SPORTS CR3W finds little reason to not put this at a "10" though?! First since '47, why would it not be?
(Associated Press)
Dayton coach Archie Miller is most famous for being the younger brother of Arizona coach Sean Miller. During a Sweet 16 news conference, someone even called him Sean, then quickly apologized. “You don’t have to worry about that,” Archie, 35, said. “Everyone calls me Sean.”

The elder brother by 10 years, Sean was the Big East freshman of the year, eventually setting the career assists record at Pitt. Archie was no slouch, a four-year letterman at +North Carolina State, but he could never get away from comparisons to his brother, who actually gave him the nickname “Archie.” His birth name is Ryan.

Sigmund Freud, go nuts with that.

The Flyers made the NCAA title game in 1967, led by Dayton native Don May (who later had a nine-year career in the NBA, winning a title with the Knicks in 1970). +UCLA Bruins beat the Flyers, 79-64, led by 20 points from sophomore Lew Alcindor.

FLORIDA: 3 (Gators’ spring football in two weeks!) Sorry buddy, +SPORTS CR3W will point out that the Gators have become much more of a basketball school to Donovan's credit and over a decade of perhaps the strongest run in all of college basketball regarding programs. Football prowess or lack thereof, does not diminish what Gators' hoops has become.

(Associated Press)
Want a gauge of how much basketball matters in the state of Florida? There was some concern this March that fans of the football-crazed Gators wouldn’t sell out its opening-round games in nearby Orlando.

“If it’s not, the iconic Billy Donovan should leave Florida for a fan base that appreciates the amazing job he’s done in building an elite basketball program where nobody thought it was possible,” +Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi wrote.

Florida is the only program in the country to make the Elite Eight in each of the past four seasons. With another title, Donovan would become the sixth coach to win at least three titles (Florida won back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007), better than Dean Smith, Roy Williams and Denny Crum. Gator fans would be proud of such an accomplishment. But would they rather have a football title, like rival +Florida State Seminoles? Absolutely.

WEST REGION

2. +Wisconsin Badgers (29-7) vs. 1. +Arizona Wildcats  (33-4)

7:49 p.m. today (+TBS)

WISCONSIN: 8 (“On, Wisconsin!”) Another undervalued meaning, this is a "9" or "10"

Photo Courtesy: Official +NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness
When Wisconsin won its only basketball title, 1947, the NCAA Tournament played second-fiddle to the NIT. There’s been a lot of basketball talent roll through Madison since then, both players and coaches.

The Badgers have been a solid but not spectacular program in the basketball-crazy Big Ten for more than a decade, making 16 straight NCAA appearances. +University of Michigan, +Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan State, +Fighting Illini and +Indiana University Athletics have all had their time in the Final Four spotlight since Wisconsin’s last appearance. In 2000, former coach Dick Bennett led a workman-like No. 8 seed to the semifinals, beating No. 1 seed Arizona (with Gilbert Arenas) in the Round of 32 in the process. Wisconsin lost to Big Ten rival +Michigan State Athletics, 53-41, the year of Tom Izzo’s only national championship.

Current Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan is one of the best in basketball, but he also wears the badge of “best current coach to never reach a Final Four.” He does, however, have four Division III titles at Wisconsin-Platteville.

ARIZONA: 5 (“Bringing the dry heat.”)

(Associated Press)
When Lute Olson led Arizona to the 2001 Final Four, eventually losing to +Duke Athletics in the final, the Wildcats' were considered one of the preeminent basketball programs in the country. At that point, Arizona had the best winning percentage of any team over the previous 13 years. Well, it’s been 13 years since the Wildcats have played on the final weekend.

Current coach Sean Miller (see above) hasn’t made the Final Four in his career, despite making the Elite Eight twice before (with +Xavier University in 2008, and Arizona in 2011). But he’s probably not sweating it as much as his brother; after all, he has one of the nation’s premier jobs.

That said, this would be as good a time as any for a Final Four trip; star freshman forward Aaron Gordon isn’t likely to stick around. Gordon continues to boost his +NBA draft stock, going 7-for-9 from the field in a 15 point, six-rebound performance last round against +San Diego State Athletics.

Pacers set Tone for Playoff Run? Small Rally Drops the Heat 84 - 83.

By MICHAEL MAROT
The Associated Press-Sports

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana took every shot Miami could muster Wednesday night.

Then the +Indiana Pacers threw a couple of their own punches - and put the two-time defending champs on the mat.

Paul George scored 23 points, Roy Hibbert added 21 and Indiana rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Heat 84-83, taking a three-game lead over Miami in the chase of the Eastern Conference's top seed.

''They're the champs, they're going to bring out the best in us,'' said David West, who made a 3-pointer with 50.2 seconds to go. ''They bring out the best in anybody. I thought we just had enough fight.''

It was one of those rare grudge matches that actually lived up to the billing.

Before the game, the teams chided one another with dueling comments. Afterward, nobody was ready to make up. And in between, the action got downright nasty.

Wed, Mar 26, 2014

+LeBron James needed a cotton swab in his nose to keep playing in the fourth quarter after getting whacked in the face. Dwyane Wade spent the final minute of the game icing his right hamstring.

Pacers center Roy Hibbert finished the game despite taking an elbow to the face that left him so groggy he didn't even remember getting hit.

James and George both wound up taking spills into basket supports, and Lance Stephenson was ejected midway through the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical foul for celebrating a basket. The angry Stephenson waved his hand at the ref and after leaving the court, threw a towel and kicked a door. Coach Frank Vogel was not amused, saying he had a stern talk with his budding star guard before he went home.

But it typified a rugged night for Miami (48-22).

''It is what it is, they ref the game, we play it,'' James said.

The +NBA best home team ended a two-game losing streak, took a 2-1 lead in the season series and now has the inside track to home-court advantage with just 10 games to play.

And (52-20) Indiana still managed to do all of that on a night James seemed to be at his best.

The four-time MVP finished with 38 points, eight rebounds, five assists, was 9 of 15 from the field and 14 of 15 from the free throw line.

The problem: James also had six turnovers, Wade had six more turnovers and Miami managed only one basket over the final 3 minutes, 23 seconds. James and Bosh both missed late jumpers that would have given Miami the lead, the last an airball by Bosh from just right of the top of the key as time expired.

''Unfortunately, that was what I diagramed,'' coach Erik Spoelstra said. ''It probably wasn't the best call. It might have been a little too gunslinger on my part. I just wanted an open shot.''

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - MARCH 26: Paul George #24 of the
Indiana Pacers dunks over LeBron James #6 of the Heat
They were so hard to come by Wednesday night that James was even called for a flagrant foul when he drove to the basket and sent the 7-foot-2, 290-pound Hibbert crashing to the ground. When Hibbert got up, he stumbled. Eventually he had to leave the court to change his blood-spattered jersey, but he refused to sit against the Heat.

Hibbert dominated the first half yet again, scoring 17 points.

But when the Heat decided to make things tough on Hibbert in the second half, George and his teammates took advantage.

George spurred the first fourth-quarter run with two monster dunks - one over the hand of a trailing James - to get the Pacers back in the game.

Later, it was Evan Turner, the trade deadline acquisition, who delivered two of Indiana's biggest baskets of the night. The first came after James' final turnover, on a breakaway layup. The second came courtesy of Mario Chalmers' turnover out of bounds. When the middle of the court opened up, Turner bolted through a clear path for an 81-80 lead with 90 seconds to go.

''I know how to get my space, I've been doing that forever, you know what I mean?'' Turner said, likely adding another spark to a rivalry that needs none. ''Some of my moves I've been doing since I was a little kid, so I can walk a pretty fine line when it comes to that.''

After Hibbert made 1 of 2 free throws, Turner scored on the layups, West hit the knockout 3 and all Miami got was a 3 from Bosh with 2.9 seconds left.

''They're a tough team, psychologically against most teams they have the edge,'' West said. ''They've got the best player in the game. Their pedigree, their entire organization, you understand what you're going to get.''

NOTES: Indiana has won its first back-to-back division titles since 1998-99 and 1999-2000. ... The Heat are now 7-8 in March. ... The Pacers and Heat meet again April 11 in Miami.

DeSean Jackson denies having gang ties after being cut by Eagles

In a stunning move, the +Philadelphia Eagles released +NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson on Friday.

The team issued the following statement: "After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today."

Jackson's departure came shortly after The (Newark) Star-Ledger published a story Friday suggesting he was affiliated with a gang in Los Angeles.

Reaction to Jackson's release

Jackson subsequently issued a statement that reads in part: "I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible.

Eagles GM: We Only Care About Winning

"I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions.

"These reports are irresponsible and just not true . I look forward to working hard for my new team. God Bless."

Following his release, Jackson also tweeted: "Steady GRind Mode God Got the Plan !! Not Me." He included a picture of himself running on a track.
+New York Jets are interested in DeSean Jackson if he is released.

One of Jackson's former teammates didn't exactly pan the news on social media.
Philadelphia center Jason Kelce tweeted: "We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldn't be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!! #FlyEaglesFly

"Good luck with whatever team you end up with DeseanJackson10!"

Jackson, 27, had been rumored to be on the trading blocks for weeks. But he inferred Monday on Twitter that he gleaned from a recent conversation with coach Chip Kelly that he would remain with the Eagles.

"Good to talk to Big Chip today!!! Say or hear what ya want!! Picture speaks for itself!! Winner," Jackson tweeted.

Kelly addressed Jackson's standing Wednesday at the +NFL meetings in Orlando.

"I talked to DeSean and when you deal with situations like that it's coach to player, player to coach,'' Kelly said. "We had a good conversation. We're always going to do what's best for the football team. ... I like DeSean. He did a really nice job for us.

"He knows where he stands with us. And I know where I stand with him.''

D8ON!! Dayton High Life is Sixth 11 seed to make the Elite 8

+University of Dayton takes down +Stanford Athletics men's hoops to advance to Elite 8. +Wisconsin Badgers made a statement by really never even giving the hot +Baylor Athletics a glimpse of hope. Badgers simply dominated to moe on to the Elite 8. Dayton will play the winner of the +Florida Gators - +UCLA Bruins and Wisconsin (2 seed) will play the winner of the +Arizona Wildcats - +San Diego State Athletics game. Both 1 seed vs 4 seed match ups.
We'll take the "smart" money on who we had in the national championship game for the last month or so and in a bracket. Gators vs Wildcats, but could it be a night for the 4 seed? Aztecs and UCLA could win these games indeed. Can't wait to see!

Early Games for Sweet 16 Tonight.

This is for Morgan Miller, of course, we are riding the Dayton High Life (+University of Dayton) Flyers, of course, although +Stanford Athletics might overwhelm with length. And as we have this bracket in tact, going with the +Baylor Athletics Bears, who are scorching hot, to take +Wisconsin Badgers in a high scoring game (not a lot of stiff defense with these two this year, normally, but nerves might affect that).

USF Men's Basketball Coach Vacancy still vacant after Discovery that Masiello does not have College Degree

A walk on of 4 years under Pitino and he did not get his degree, in our opinion this is a black eye for all involved and a bit embarrassing. How can Coach Casiello think he has a degree? Only to find out he does not? Makes you wonder how many athletes with Pitino, scholastics was an emphasis or how much... TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Steve Masiello's promising coaching career is in limbo after his deal with +USF Athletics fell apart because he doesn't have a college diploma.

+Manhattan College said Wednesday that it had placed him on leave while Masiello is ''reviewing his degree status.''

South Florida confirmed earlier Wednesday that the school had an agreement in principle to lure Masiello away from Manhattan, but that the contract was contingent on ''a verification of credentials.''

USF requires its basketball coach to have at least a bachelor's degree. The 39-year-old Masiello did not graduate after attending Kentucky, where he played for Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith from 1996-2000.

''Through the verification process it was determined the candidate's credentials could not be substantiated and therefore he did not meet the requirements for the position,'' the school said in a brief statement. ''The national search continues and USF looks forward to introducing a new coach at the appropriate time.''

Masiello has a 61-39 record in three seasons at Manhattan. The Jaspers went 28-5 this season, which ended with a close loss to Louisville in the +NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness.

Kentucky spokesman Jay Blanton verified Masiello was a student there from 1996-2000 in the college of communication, but did not graduate. Masiello's bio on Manhattan's web site says the coach graduated from Kentucky in 2000 with a degree in communications.

Manhattan said in a statement that it ''learned there is a question of the validity'' of Masiello's degree after South Florida commissioned a background check.

''Masiello is currently in the process of reviewing his degree status with the University of Kentucky,'' the statement said. ''Manhattan College has placed Masiello on leave while he completes this process with the university.''

Masiello, a former assistant under Pitino at Louisville, was going to replace former USF coach Stan Heath, who was fired this month.

A one-time ball boy for Pitino when his mentor was coach of the New York Knicks, Masiello was a walk-on at Kentucky and part of a team that made two trips to the Final Four and won one national championship. He was an assistant at Manhattan and +Tulane University before spending six seasons on Pitino's staff at +Louisville Cardinals Athletics.

USF fired Heath on March 14 after the Bulls finished 12-20, including 3-15 in their first season in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls appeared to be on the rise two years ago, when they tied a school record with 22 wins and made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in two decades.

But Heath won just 24 games over his final two se

Sources: Kansas center Joel Embiid to enter NBA draft

Kansas star Joel Embiid – a possible No. 1 overall choice – has decided to enter the June NBA draft, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Embiid, a 20-year-old, 7-foot freshman, rapidly emerged as one of college basketball's major talents and moved into competition with +Kansas Jayhawks teammate Andrew Wiggins and +Duke Basketball's, Jabari Parker, to be the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft.

Wiggins has been consistent in saying he’ll only play one year of college basketball, and Parker says he still is deciding whether he'll enter the draft.

A formal announcement on Embiid's decision is expected soon. In the past week, Embiid has progressed in settling on agent representation, but no final decision has been made, sources said.

Embiid's season ended prematurely with a stress fracture in his back, costing him the final two games of the regular season, the Big 12 tournament and Kansas' two games in the NCAA tournament. Until the injury, Kansas was considered a serious national championship contender.

There's a strong expectation Embiid will make a full recovery, but +NBA  teams will closely examine the long-term fitness of the injury.

Embiid has shown to be a dominating presence on offense and defense, offering NBA executives evidence he could transform into a rare franchise center. A native of Cameroon, he enrolled at a Florida prep school as a 16-year-old with limited experience as a basketball player.

Embiid averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 23 minutes a game for Kansas this season.

CHICAGO (AP) -- The +Chicago Bears were looking to jolt their struggling defense. How does adding Jared Allen sound?

The Bears agreed to a four-year contract with the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Wednesday, replacing one accomplished pass rusher with another as they rebuild a defense that ranked among the league's worst last season.

A person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press that Allen will get $15.5 million guaranteed on a deal that could be worth as much as $32 million. The person requested anonymity because the terms have not been announced.

Allen's deal can be voided down to three years and $24 million, but the first two years of his salary and a roster bonus next March are fully guaranteed.

The 31-year-old Allen spent the previous six years with the NFC North rival +Minnesota Vikings. He will take over for Julius Peppers, who signed with +Green Bay Packers as a free agent after being released by the Bears. Chicago's defense ranked 30th in the NFL last season and was 32nd and last against the run.

''This is another important step in our continued efforts to build our team towards a championship level,'' general manager Phil Emery told the team's website.

In a statement, Allen thanked his teammates and coaches in Minnesota along with the fans.

''I can only hope that I have left with you all, with even a fraction of the positive support and impact you have had on my life, my foundation and my family,'' he said. ''I am very excited about this next chapter in my career with the Chicago Bears and can't wait to see what the future holds for us.''

He had 11 1/2 sacks last season, reaching double digits in sacks for seven straight years, and is considered a solid run defender.

Allen also had talks with the Seahawks and Cowboys. His move to the Bears adds plenty of intrigue to the NFC North picture.

The Vikings acquired Allen from Kansas City in 2007 and signed him to a six-year, $73 million contract that at the time made him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Allen was one of the most-feared pass rushers in the NFL over the life of that deal. In 2011, he had 22 sacks.

He made $17 million last season, and the Vikings, who were coming off a disappointing 5-10-1 record, were looking to get younger at the position.

''We wish Jared the best as he turns to the next chapter of his NFL career,'' general manager Rick Spielman said in a statement. ''Not only was he an outstanding player on the field for the Vikings over his six seasons, but he also helped change lives in our community through his charitable work. Jared will always be a fan favorite, and we hope he stays involved with the Vikings franchise in years to come.''
Minnesota signed Everson Griffen to a big contract to take Allen's place and also said goodbye to stalwart defensive tackle Kevin Williams in a revamped front four under new coach Mike Zimmer. The Vikings did express some interest in having Allen return, but it became clear early in the process that the numbers wouldn't match up.

Allen said he wasn't looking to simply chase Super Bowl rings or become a situational pass rusher at this stage of his career, so he took his time trying to find the right fit. When Allen hit the market with Peppers and the Cowboys' DeMarcus Ware, three of the most accomplished defensive ends of their generation were available. Ware signed with Denver, and Peppers got a three-year, $26.5 million deal with $7.5 million guaranteed from the Packers earlier in free agency.

''We believe he's going to come in hungry and excited to be part of our football team, and we believe he'll fit right in with the other new players that we've added and the guys that are already on the defensive side of the ball,'' coach Marc Trestman told the team's site.

Allen is by far the signature addition in a busy offseason.

Besides letting Peppers go, the Bears brought back two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Tillman on a one-year deal.

They also have new defensive ends in Willie Young and Lamarr Houston. They added Ryan Mundy and M.D. Jennings to the mix at safety and signed lineman Israel Idonije, hoping to boost a defense that got shredded last season.

The Bears went 8-8 while missing the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. Now, maybe, they will have the defense to go with an offense that flourished in Trestman's first season as coach.

If nothing else, they created a big stir by adding Allen.

''A changing of the guard in the (hash)NFCNorth. (hash)69 a Bear! It's looking up for this bunch! Welcome (at)JaredAllen69,'' star linebacker Lance Briggs wrote on Twitter.

What Matt Schaub Does for the Raiders

+FOX Sports - Fox Football Daily Discusses what the +Oakland Raiders offseason outlook is with the acquisition of QB, Matt Schaub.

Raiders agree to trade for QB Matt Schaub (updated)

The Raiders have agreed to trade a late-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft to the Texans in exchange for quarterback Matt Schaub. He is currently on his way to Oakland for a physical.

The move is the latest in an attempt by Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie to win now and bridge the gap so that last year’s and this year’s upcoming draft picks are the centerpieces in the future. Nine of the 10 players the Raiders have signed this month are all at least 29 years old but their contracts are easy to get away from after the 2014 season if need be.

+ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the trade.

Schaub, 32, threw 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season, including an interception returned for a touchdown during a league-record four straight games. The previous six years, his completion percentage of 65.1 ranked seventh among qualified starters, and he threw almost twice as many touchdowns (114) as interceptions (64).

Schaub’s base salary next year is $10.93 million (with a $14.5 million salary-cap hit) because of roster bonuses. Indications are that the Raiders will absorb it. They desperately needed a quarterback and will take the hit as they have plenty of salary-cap room. There is no real reason for Schaub to restructure, as he was set to be released in June and could have signed wherever he wanted.

Schaub became expendable when the +Houston Texans signed former +Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year deal Thursday night.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen, offensive coordinator Greg Olson and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo are in the midst of a nationwide tour of college pro days, seeing if there was a quarterback worthy of the No. 5 overall pick in the draft. This week alone, they have traveled to see Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Derek Carr. It is safe to say that they are not in love with any of them.

Houston has the first pick in the draft, and I think there is a good chance they take Bortles.

What does this all mean for Matt McGloin?

The Raiders like McGloin, who started six games last season as an undrafted rookie, a lot as a second-string quarterback. They used the “McGloin bar” to evaluate quarterbacks in free agency and the draft, teanm sources said, as they wanted someone better to start next season. Terrelle Pryor and Trent Edwards are the other quarterbacks currently on the roster.

McKenzie does not have a good track record with quarterbacks in his two years in Oakland. He traded away Carson Palmer last spring after failed attempts to restructure his contract and traded for Matt Flynn, who was a disaster and lost his starting job to Pryor in the preseason. McKenzie also drafted former Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson in the fourth round last year, and the Raiders cut him, making Wilson the highest pick in the draft to be cut.

Flynn lost his confidence last year, and that is one of the biggest concerns with Schaub as well.

After leading the Texans to back-to-back AFC South Division titles in 2011 and 2012, Schaub struggled last season and was benched for rookie Case Keenum in October. The 10-year veteran regained the starting job in late December but could not help the Texans avoid finishing the season with a 14-game losing streak.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Schaub has eclipsed 4,000 passing yards three times in his career.

Schaub is a part of Raiders’ history already. He threw the game-ending interception to Michael Huff in Oakland’s emotional 25-20 win in Houston on Oct. 9, 2011, the day after long-time owner Al Davis’ death.

Lakers Drop 51 in 3rd, Crush the Knicks in LA 127 - 96

LAKERS DROP 51 IN 3RD QUARTER,

BLAST KNICKS 127-96

LOS ANGELES (AP) — With Knicks President Phil Jackson watching from a luxury suite high above the court, his new team's teetering playoff hopes got a big shove from his old team's incredible offensive show.

Xavier Henry scored 22 points, Nick Young hit five 3-pointers while scoring 20 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers set a franchise record with 51 points in the third quarter of their 127-96 victory over New York on Tuesday night.

Although the Lakers have 16 +NBA championships and a luminous list of former superstars, those teams never had a quarter to compare to the 12 magical minutes played after halftime by Los Angeles' current patchwork roster.

And no Knicks defense had ever given up 51 points in a quarter until this team did it in a key game for its postseason chase. New York dropped three games behind Atlanta for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We hit shots all over the place," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It's infectious. When you start taking good shots, they start going in, and even the hard shots start going in."

Indeed, the Lakers hit 19 of their 26 shots with six 3-pointers, stretching an eight-point halftime lead to 30. Nine players contributed a field goal to the spree, led by nine points from Chris Kaman in his first game action in March.

"It feels good, but it only lasts one night," said Henry, who played exceptionally well with a torn ligament in his shooting wrist. "We've just got to be encouraged for the rest of the season from it."

Kent Bazemore scored 18 points as the Lakers won consecutive games for the first time in more than three weeks with a season-high 82 points from their reserves, including Henry and Young.

Jodie Meeks had four 3-pointers as Los Angeles finished one 3-pointer shy of the single-game club record during the Lakers' highest-scoring game of the season. Five players hit multiple 3-pointers, including three apiece for Henry and rookie Ryan Kelly.

Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points for the Knicks, who have lost two straight after an eight-game winning streak. Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 17 points and Amare Stoudemire had 16 in the +New York Knicks seventh straight road loss to the Lakers since 2007.

"At the end of the day, it's just individual pride," said J.R. Smith, who had 12 points. "You have to have pride in guarding your man, guarding the ball, and we just didn't have that the last three quarters."

The Knicks are assured of a losing season with their 42nd loss, and the Hawks have two games in hand in the playoff race. Those high stakes and Jackson's looming presence weren't enough to spur New York to a competent defensive performance.

"I thought we came out ready to play," New York coach Mike Woodson said. "I mean, we held them to 14 points in the first quarter, and then that second and third quarter, all hell broke loose. We just didn't have any answer for them from a defensive standpoint. I thought the plan was perfect starting the game, and when they went to their bench, they came out blazing and we just couldn't control them."

Jackson's fiancee, Lakers executive Jeanie Buss, watched from the second row. The 11-time NBA champion coach arrived late at the building where he won five titles with the Lakers, who declined to re-hire him early last season, infuriating much of their fan base.

With Pau Gasol sidelined by vertigo, Kaman had 13 points and nine rebounds as the Lakers' starting center. Steve Nash also sat out for the 17th time in the Lakers' last 18 games.

The Lakers missed 13 of their 18 shots in a 14-point first quarter, but rolled off a 22-4 run in 5½ minutes to open the second. Meeks and Jordan Hill then expanded the Lakers' lead with a 12-0 run early in the third before the Lakers really got rolling.

NOTES: Young converted a four-point play in the third quarter. He has six of the Lakers' nine four-point plays this season, both franchise records. ... Gasol will be re-examined Wednesday before the Lakers determine whether he will travel with them to Milwaukee and Minnesota this week. ... Metta World Peace, the former Knicks and Lakers forward, attended the game. New York waived the former Ron Artest on Feb. 24. He got a rousing ovation from the Staples Center crowd when he appeared on the scoreboard in the first half, and he sat in Jackson's box during the second half.
